Party Appetizer: Bacon Cream Cheese Sushi Roll
This delicious blend of fresh veggies, creamy cheese, and smoky bacon makes for a tantalizing party appetizer that is sure to get eaten up!
If you couldn’t tell from the name, here at Events to Celebrate, we are all about having a good party. And that’s why we are so excited to share this deliciously simple and flavorful recipe: a bacon cream cheese sushi roll.
Now, I have to preface. The name is somewhat deceptive. This recipe doesn’t actually include either of the most common ingredients of sushi: fish or rice. However, because of the fillings and overall wrapping shape, we felt that “sushi” was the most fitting name.
Come along with me as I tell you why this unique sushi roll is worth trying and how exactly to create it!
Ideas For Using this Recipe
While this recipe was created with a party in mind (appetizers for the win!), there are plenty of other ways to enjoy it! After all, it uses a blend of DELICIOUS ingredients, is relatively straightforward to assemble, and is pretty cost-effective. It can be a little tedious to individually wrap each bite, but I promise that the flavor makes it worth it!
Here are some fun use ideas for this recipe:
- After school snack for kids
- Stay-in date night activity
- Cleaning out your fridge
- Dietary friendly option for those who are gluten free or keto
- Baby shower/bridal shower/bachelorette party appetizer
- Celebratory food for either International Bacon Day or International Sushi Day
Ingredients for these Sushi Rolls
- Bacon – This seaweed swap is denser and more protein packed, but also adds a hearty, smokey flavor to the dish. If you don’t want any bacon fat, remove it before cooking.
- Cucumber – Sushi is known for being refreshing, and this definitely helps add a light element to the dish. You can choose to leave the skin on or remove it, just make sure the cucumber makes it inside.
- Carrots – Not only are carrots great for adding a pop of color, but they also offer a very subtle sweetness that pairs nicely with the other flavors. If using whole carrots, be sure to thoroughly wash and peel them.
- Avocado – Avocado offers a natural creaminess that contrasts the crunch of the other vegetables and truly adds to the flavor profile of the dish. Opt for avocado that is soft and vibrant green in color.
- Cream Cheese – This creamy element helps marry all the other fillings together. It’s thick, sticky, and satisfying.
- Seasonings – To further enhance the flavors that are already there, a light sprinkle of salt, garlic powder and dill weed into the cream cheese can go a long way.
- Sesame Seeds – Though small in size, sesame seeds can provide a tiny crunch to the dish, adding a small flavor and texture variety.
- Optional: Jalapeno – While not necessary, a sliver of jalapeno can add flare to the dish by bringing a slight heat that will awaken the senses. (Def add in my opinion!)
Tips for Making this Party Appetizer
- Make Fresh (if possible) – Because this recipe includes fresh ingredients such as the cucumber and avocado, it is best to make it is fresh as possible. Doing so will help prevent browning. However, if you make it a little early, store it in an airtight container in the fridge.
- Same Size Veggies – Generally, the bacon slices end up being about 1-1 1/2 inches wide when cooked. Because of this, You want to cut veggies that are similar in size to the bacon and each other. By following this size range, you will have sushi fillings that are proportionate
- Wrap-able Bacon – The way that you cook your bacon can significantly impact its pliability. For bacon that is easier to wrap, I suggest using an oven, air fryer, or microwave and cooking in shorter increments. This may result in not as much of the bacon being cooked off, so if fatty portions bother you, simply remove them before cooking. Just cook according to your personal preference.
- Remove Bacon Grease – While bacon grease is full of flavor, you don’t want your sushi rolls dripping in it. To help keep the sushi clean and presentable, use a paper towel to dry your bacon and remove excess grease prior to wrapping the rolls.
