The Origins of This Recipe
You ever surprise yourself by throwing together a few items in the fridge and it actually turning out AMAZING? Because that is exactly what happened with this recipe.
I frequently purchase wonton wrappers for a salad we use them in. However, I always have some leftover wrappers that I’m not sure what to do with. So, one day I saw them in the fridge and had the GENIUS idea to stuff them with Nutella and fry them! It was one of those moments where as soon as I thought of it, I knew it couldn’t be bad. I mean c’mon. Fried nutella wontons dusted in powdered sugar and layered with juicy strawberries?? How could that go wrong?!
And now, it has become a favorite treat for our whole family!
Nutella Wonton Ingredients
- Vegetable oil – You could try other oils, but this one is a good go-to for frying. It’s cheap, easy to access, and has a very neutral flavor.
- Wonton wrappers – While often used for savory Asian dishes, these can easily be used as a thin frying dough for desserts. They can be found at pretty much an grocery store in the fridge or ethnic foods section.
- Nutella hazelnut spread – This well-loved chocolatey spread makes the perfect wonton filling. It’s smooth, rich, and pre-made!
- Strawberries – With the heavy wonton filling, these offer much needed freshness to brighten the dish. You could also try other berries or fresh fruit.
- Powdered sugar – This ingredient helps to macerate the strawberries AND decorate the fried wontons, making them look as decadent as they taste!
Instructions for Making Nutella Wontons
There are just a few steps to making this indulgent, rich dessert, so let me walk you through them!
Optional Step: Prep Your Strawberries
While the macerated strawberries aren’t totally necessary, I do think they add a bright fruity flavor that helps to cut through the richness of both the fried dough and thick Nutella spread. So, if you plan to add them, prep them before getting started on the wontons.
Start by cutting a pint of strawberries and adding 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar, mixed it together and let it rest in the fridge for about an hour while you make the wontons.
I’ve seen some recipes put a banana or strawberry slice inside the wonton with the Nutella, but I really prefer the contrast of the crispy shell and hot, gooey chocolate to the cold fruit. I just think it pairs together perfectly! And if you don’t want strawberries, you could always try raspberries, blueberries, bananas, and more!
Step 1: Cut Wonton Wrappers and Wet the Edges
Some wonton wrappers come in large sheets while other come in smaller squares. Mine are the large sheets, so I opted to cut each wonton sheet in half, making long rectangles of dough. However, if you have small squares, those can still work too! You’ll just use two small squares to create the pocket.
Once you have your wonton wrappers to an appropriate size, use a tiny bit of water or milk to wet the edges (and middle where the fold will be). Doing so will help the edges stick together after the filling is added.
Step 2: Add Nutella Filling
After the edges have been glazed with a bit of liquid, it is time to add the Nutella filling! Using a clean spoon, scoop a 1 – 1 1/2 tablespoons of Nutella into the center of one side.
Step 3: Fold Wontons and Heat the Oil
Next, fold one end over the other to create square Nutella wontons. Start pressing just around the ball of Nutella pushing out any air bubbles and sealing all of the edges.
Repeat these first few steps for as many wontons as you wish to make. If you’re making this in advance (up to a full day), you can layer them in a plastic storage container and separate layers with a slightly damp paper towel.
When you’re ready to fry, heat a few inches of vegetable oil in a sauce pan to 275 degrees Fahrenheit. You will know it is ready when you stick the end of a wooden spoon/chopstick in it and small bubbles form around the spoon.
Step 4: Cook Nutella Wontons
Once the oil is heated, and then gently place your filled wontons in one at a time. Be careful not to over crowd the frying pan. Place just a couple in at a time and do batches if necessary.
Cook each wonton for about 30-60 seconds per side until golden brown. Then, remove them from hot oil and drain on a paper towel lined plate. Allow them to cool for a few minutes.
Step 5: Decorate and Serve
While the Nutella wontons are still warm, dust them generously with powdered sugar through a fine mesh strainer and add the macerated strawberries just before serving.
As on unofficial last step, i’d like to recommend that you throw on your comfy sweat pants and enjoy these Nutella wontons with a beloved chick-flick. It truly is the best way to enjoy this yummmmmmy treat!!
