In this recipe, we will show you how to make the ultra-simplified version or take it up a notch with your own homemade cookie dough and brownie mix! You decide the difficulty!

The nice thing is, no matter what you decide, the result is still the same: an over-the-top delicious dessert bar made from the perfect trifecta of American sweets!

But before we dive into the baking, let’s talk about that wild name.

Origin of the name “Slutty Brownie”

I have to admit, the name “Slutty Brownie” had me asking so many questions. A brownie can be a lot of things…but slutty?

I decided to do a little digging and found that the original cookie-brownie hybrid dessert was created and posted online by bloggers Kevin and Amanda back in 2011. This recipe was then copied and given its dirty new name by a different blogger (The Londoner) in the hopes of making it viral. And viral it became! Once The Londoner coined the new name for the dessert, it stuck.

This news made me reflect on the reasoning behind the filthy name. Some parties claim the name comes from them being “easy,” while others say that it’s a reference to being enjoyed by many people or “messy”. And some people hold to the idea that it was simply used to increase attention.

So basically, who knows?!

Here’s what I do know. The name may be up for interpretation, but everyone agrees on what they are. A delicious, layered dessert made up of:

  • Cookie
  • Oreos
  • Brownie

Advice for Making/Eating Slutty Brownies

The best two pieces of advice when it comes to slutty brownies:

  1. Try them chilled! I’ve been advised by the teens in my life that “there’s no other way.”
  2. Don’t plan on any leftovers!

What’s fun about these is that they really are only as complicated as you make them. Have a favorite brownie/cookie recipe? Use them! Don’t have much time? Use store-bought cookie dough and a brownie mix!

Tips for Making Slutty Brownies

Notes here:

  • I used a whole batch of cookie dough! I love this recipe from Sally’s baking addiction. Make sure to cream your butter and sugars correctly and ouhh it’s the yummiest texture.
  • If you’re using packaged cookie dough, I’d recommend two 16oz packages for a 9×13 pan. This will give you a nice thick layer of cookie in every bite!
  • One boxed mix or half a homemade batch of brownies should be plenty. I made a half batch of my favorite recipe that normally yields a 9×13 and it was perfect. I’ll share that below!

Ingredients for Slutty Brownies

Slutty brownies are comprised of 3 layers: cookie dough, Oreos, and brownies. Here’s what you will need to bring it all together:

  • Pre-made chocolate chip cookie dough OR the ingredients from your favorite recipe. (Mine is linked here!)
  • 1 package of original Oreos
  • 1 package of store-bought brownie mix OR 1/2 batch of my brownie recipe!!

Note: If you use store-bought pre-made mixes, make sure you have the needed ingredients for them. Usually, it’s a mix of eggs, oil, and water.

My Ooey Gooey Chocolaty Brownie Recipe – Half batch (8×8)

I’ve adapted this recipe from a blog (no longer published) I loved long ago. Don’t let the dark
cocoa and chips scare you. These are so chocolatey and wonderful; you won’t regret it!

  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 cup + 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • ½ tbsp vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup flour
  • ½ cup + 2 tbsp dark cocoa powder
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips

Steps for making the brownie mix:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Grease an 8×8 pan and set aside.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  4. Add the sugar to the saucepan and cook for two minutes, stirring so it doesn’t burn.
  5. Remove from heat and let cool several minutes.
  6. Add your egg and vanilla. Stir until combined.
  7. In a separate bowl, mix together your dry ingredients – flour, dark cocoa powder, baking
    powder, salt.
  8. Combine your wet ingredients with your dry, mixing until just combined.
  9. Add chocolate chips, mixing again until just combined.
  10. Spread into your pan and bake for 25-30 minutes. A toothpick should come out with damp crumbs. You may need to test a couple areas due to the chocolate chips. You don’t want to overcook these! Another check is the edge – it should be firm and just starting to pull away from the edge of the pan.
  11. Let cool for an hour or so before cutting.

Slutty Brownie Recipe Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Grease a 9×13 pan or line it with parchment paper. (Tip: I prefer glass and greasing the
pan for these so I can see the base better.)
  3. Prepare/open your cookie dough and spread evenly into the bottom of your pan.
  4. Place a single layer of Oreos over top of your cookie dough.
  5. Prepare your brownie mix (homemade or as directed) and spread evenly over top your
Oreos. It may be helpful to spoon dollops of mix all over and then use a rubber spatula
(or your hands if it’s really thick) to spread into an even layer.
  6. Bake at 350 for about 40 minutes. A toothpick should come out mostly clean with a few
moist crumbs on it. Poke another spot to check if your first poke only brought up
chocolate chip! If you can see the base, it’s helpful to see the cookies turning golden.
  7. Cool completely and remove. Either flip out (quickly!) onto a cutting board or use the
edges of the parchment to pull up gently.
  8. Once cooled (don’t skip this!!), cut brownies to desired size. I tend to cut mine a little
smaller than I normally would simply because they are so thick and rich.
  9. Store in an airtight container for up to a week, assuming they last that long!

Making them Allergy Friendly

Cookies – I have yet to find a GF/vegan variation that I love. I’d recommend using another
recipe/store-bought as opposed to modifying Sally’s recipe.

Brownies – GF flour such as Bob Mill can be used with yummy results. If you’re going to make
vegan swaps, I’ve used Country Crock olive oil butter and flax eggs and those are great! Kroger
brand and Trader Joe’s chocolate chips both work really well, too!

Oreos – Oreo brand makes gluten-free Oreos that taste nearly identical to the real thing! I’ve yet to hear of a vegan version, but the gluten-free ones are a go!
