Crisco Chocolate Chip Cookie FAQs

What is shortening?

Shortening is a general term used for any fat that is solid at room temperature. The most commonly known forms are margarine, lard, and vegetable shortenings such as Crisco. Since shortening is 100% fat (as opposed to the 80% fat in butter) it reacts slightly differently in baked goods such as cookies, breads, and cakes.

In this recipe, it makes cookies that turn out every time, taste delicious, and are satisfyingly soft.

Is butter or Crisco better to use for chocolate chip cookies?

Cookies made with butter tend to have a crispy texture and slightly richer flavor while cookies produced with shortening have a softer, chewy texture. So, it just depends on your preference! Generally, you can do a one-to-one substitution if you want to swap one for the other in a recipe.

Can I use regular shortening instead of butter flavored?

Either one will work. The butter-flavored shortening will simply provide a richer flavor.

Does it matter whether I use semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips?

Nope! Both work great. Really the only difference between the two is their level of sweetness. Milk chocolate chips are much sweeter. Semi-sweet chocolate chips have a slightly more bitter flavor.

How to make these Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies

Cookie texture depends on a lot of factors such as the amount of flour you use, the type of sugar, and the form of fat that is incorporated! That is why there are so many different recipes. Some make them more cakey while others make them more flat.

This recipe uses a mixture of sugars, a decent amount of flour, and butter-flavored Crisco to give you cookies that are the perfect medium of soft and crunchy!
