“Wicked Cool” Harry Potter Party Ideas
Harry Potter Party ideas for food, crafts, and games!! Perfect for planning a magical party!!
Did you know that July 31st is Harry Potter’s Birthday?!? Each year we celebrate by inviting friends to come drink butterbeer and watch one of the movies. This year we switched things up and made crafts, played games and enjoyed some treats. It was easy to put together, the supplies were easily found at my local Walmart, and I didn’t fuss with any decorations. My daughter Lucy has more than a dozen Harry Potter LEGO sets, as well as the entire set of Harry Potter Funko Pop dolls, and other Harry Potter memorabilia so we just displayed all of that.

Chocolate Frogs: I melted chocolate chips and added Rice Crispy cereal to make the chocolate go further and the chocolate frogs more enjoyable to eat. I used a chocolate frog mold and filled them, tapping them on the countertop several times to get the air bubbles out before chilling them in the fridge.
Golden Snitch: Using gold metallic tissue paper, I cut ovals and folded them in half and glued them to the end of a toothpick. I inserted two into each Ferrero Rocher.
Butterbeer: There are lots of complicated recipes for Butterbeer on the internet. I’ve simplified it and we love the way it tastes! I just use Cream Soda, Torani Syrup and whipped topping that you can squirt from a can. Give it all a good stir and really try to incorporate the whipped topping into the drink. I gave the kids a choice today of English Toffee, Salted Caramel or Butterscotch Torani Syrups today and I think the Butterscotch tasted the most authentic to the Butterbeer I’ve had at Universal Studios, but I preferred the flavor of the English Toffee the most.
Harry Potter Crafts
Harry Potter Wands: I prep the wands ahead of time by adding lots of hot glue to wooden chopsticks. I concentrate on one end to make a sort of handle, but then trail it down the sides to give it a warped look all the way down. Then I set out a variety of craft paint colors and brushes and let the kids go wild! It is fun to see the color combinations they choose.
Dragon Eggs: Using plastic Easter Eggs, I added shapes in hot glue before turning them over to the kids to paint. I encouraged them to let the eggs be colorful and not be afraid of the metallic surface of the egg showing through. They were so creative in painting them different colors!
The Monster Book of Monsters: My local Walmart had miniature composition books 3/$1. I precut all of the pieces of colored felt. I helped the younger kids with the hot glue gun, but let the older kids try gluing it all themselves. The kids wrapped their notebook in brown felt, added some white felt teeth and a red forked felt tongue. The last detail was adding as few or as many googly eyes as they wanted. Didn’t they turn out darling?!
Harry Potter Games
Free Dobby: This game was the favorite of the youngest kids, but probably because they didn’t really understand the other two since they aren’t as familiar with all the details of the books and movies like the older kids. I printed a Dobby the Elf coloring page and taped it to one of our cornhole boards. The kids then tossed rolled up socks instead of bean bags to “Free Dobby!”
Harry Potter Pictionary: Using the list provided on this blog, I printed and cut out the Harry Potter words. Rather than using them for charades, we had the kids take turns drawing a paper out of a bowl, and drawing it on a small whiteboard until their friends guessed what they were drawing.
Harry Potter Would You Rather: Get Away Today has free printable Harry Potter Would You Rather cards and they made our final game. The questions get pretty specific and if your kids only have a general knowledge of the books and movies, these may not be the best fit for them. I really loved them and was so impressed with how “Potter Nerdy” they were.
