Tips for Creating A Charcuterie Board
- Pick the size of your board! – Be mindful when deciding what size of your board. You can go with extra large, large, medium or small. You want to create a board that is full and vibrant looking, so just consider how many guests you are expecting.
- Choose a theme – Having a theme will guide the colors, flavors, and ingredients of your board. This way, it feels intentionally thought out and cohesive, despite being a mix of many different food items.
- Budget! – Charcuterie boards can be expensive. To avoid that, make an inventory in your pantry of what you have. Make a list of fruits/veggies that are in season, sweets that are on sale, etc. Try to invest in foods that you know will get eaten, that are relatively inexpensive, and that can potentially be repurposed.
- Know your eaters – Are you serving your board to kids? adults? teens? Your audience will determine the kinds of foods included on the charcuterie board. Don’t get stuff that people don’t like. If your guests are children most likely they will not appreciate nuts, fancy cheese, expensive meats. If you are feeding youth they probably do not like seafood unless they are more adventurous teenagers. Adults can generally handle stronger flavors, spice, etc.
- Have a variety of elements – Even if you’re making a small charcuterie board, you still want to have a variety of flavors, textures, and colors. This makes the board look appetizing, interesting, and festive.
Halloween Charcuterie Board Essentials
Rule number one when making a charcuterie board is to have variety!! That’s what makes it interesting. So for a Halloween charcuterie board, think a balance of sweet and salty. You don’t want to go too overboard with the options, but options do make it exciting.
Here are some common charcuterie board food categories with ideas!
- Sweet Foods: Glazed nuts, muffins, chocolate, cookies, sweet bars, brownies, bite size donuts, candies, and more.
- Favorite Cheeses: Soft cheese like brie, flavored cream cheese, bite sized cheese like marinated mozzarella balls, medium cheddar, smoked gouda, and havarti.
- Crackers/ Breads: Mini naan bread, baguettes, croutons, baked bread, salty crackers, and more. Trader Joes have a good selection of crackers. If you don’t have that in your area Walmart and Harmon’s are good options too.
- Fresh Fruit/Vegetables: Choose produce that is in season. And either serve produce that is relatively dry and clean (cherry tomatoes, strawberries, blueberries, etc.), or put messier items (cucumbers, raspberries, pomegranate, etc.) in a dish. You can also use dried fruits like raisins, dried mango, and banana chips.
- Spreads and Dips: Jams, butter, dips, whipped cream, sauces, and more. These can be added to the other elements, creating all kinds of options for food combinations.

Making Halloween Themed Elements for Your Board
Butternut “Spider Web” Soup – I followed this recipe from Health Beet for butternut squash soup and then used sour cream to draw circles in the soup bowl. Then, take a toothpick and draw out the edges on the sour cream to create a spider web. Use an olive to create a spider shape and add that to the soup.
Prosciutto Wrapped “Fingers” – Cut cheese sticks in half. Then wrap them in prosciutto.
Yogurt Covered “Monster” Pretzels – Coat pretzels in melted chocolate or yogurt. While they are still wet, add candy googly eyes.
Peanut Butter “Mummy” Bananas – Remove the banana peel and cut bananas in half. Use peanut butter to drizzle “mummy” wrapping on it and add googly eyes.
“Jack-o-lantern” Bell Pepper and Dip – Wash, cut and clean out the insides of your bell pepper. Then cut out a shape face on the side. Fill with a dip of your choice.
“Eyeball” Olives – Either use filled olives and add a drop of balsamic vinegar on the end or place a candy eye in the end of the olive.
“Vampire Teeth” Apples and Marshmallows – Place mini marshmallows cut to look like teeth in between slices of apple. You can use marshmallow fluff or peanut butter to keep the marshmallows in place.
