Ingredients for this Butterfly Fruit Tray

When it comes to making a fruit tray, you want to have at least a few different types of fruit. If you do a smaller one, you could get away with 3-5 different types of fruit. If you’re making a mid-size fruit tray, I suggest having 5-8 fruit options. And if you’re making a vary large fruit tray, consider including 8-12 different kinds of fruit.

Regardless, you want to be mindful of a few things when selecting the fruit for a fruit tray. Think about how many people you have to serve, textures of the fruit, what is in season, and colors. This will help you create a fruit tray that is colorful, flavorful, and enticing!

For this recipe, I used:

  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Blueberries
  • Blackberries
  • Oranges
  • Pomegranate
  • Raspberries
  • Grapes * I meant to add these and then totally forgot haha, whoops!

However some other fruits that would be great to add include strawberries, cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple, kiwis, and watermelon. Most of these fruits aren’t currently in season, so I chose to go with the fruits that would be the most fresh and flavorful!

Tips for Assembling the Fruit Tray

Let’s be honest, assembling a fruit tray is pretty simple. However, I have just a few tips that can make the task even easier and the results even more delicious!

  • Rinse and Dry Fruit – Make sure to thoroughly rinse your fruit and pat it dry before placing it on the serving tray. This will remove any dirt, bugs, or chemicals that may be on the fruit. And while patting them dry might feel unnecessary, it can prevent excess water from pooling on the serving tray. Definitely helpful!
  • Work From the Middle Out – When assembling a butterfly fruit tray, start in the middle and work outwards, building each butterfly wing. This will make it much easier to keep fruit in place, center the design on your serving tray, and make the wings look symmetrical.
  • Prevent Fruit Oxidation (Browning) – Want to keep you fruit from browning? Give a light brush of lemon juice! Generally, you don’t have to worry about this with berries or most peeled fruit. However, bananas and apples can become brown rather quickly. And if you’re worried about the fruit being overly sour, you could dilute the lemon juice with a little water or add a pinch of sugar.

Frequently Asked Questions – Fruit Trays

1. Is it cheaper to make or buy a fruit tray?

  • It is almost always cheaper to make a fruit tray yourself. This is because you are the one performing the labor, rather than someone else. While it can take a little bit of effort and time, making a fruit tray often results in a lower price point and fresher tasting fruit.

2. What fruit is best for building a fruit tray?

  • Usually, seasonal fruit is the best to use for building a fruit tray. This is because fruits that are in season will be on sale and have the most vibrant, juicy flavor. However, some staples include apples, various kinds of berries, and melon chunks.

3. How much fruit should I plan for each guest?

  • In general, it is good to plan on providing about 1/2 – 3/4 cup of fruit per person. Some guests might eat more and others might eat less, but this is a safe amount to plan for, especially if you use popular fruits that people are familiar with such as apples, strawberries, and grapes.
