Between the cozy fall foods, delightfully silly holidays and a few meaningful occasions, there are plenty of easy ways to make an ordinary October day feel special.

Use this list as inspiration, not as 31 more things you need to add to your calendar. Just choose a few October holidays your family would like. It’s always fun to enjoy a new food. Try turning one or two of these ideas into a fun date night, and another into a great excuse to have a few friends over and have a casual party!

October 1: National Homemade Cookies Day

Start the month with a batch of homemade cookies! Make a longtime family favorite or try a new fall cookie recipe. If you don’t have time to bake from scratch, refrigerated cookie dough absolutely counts.

For an easy family activity, let everyone add their own mix-ins or decorate a few cookies. You could also package some up and deliver them to a neighbor.

For an easy crowd pleaser, try my favorite cookie: Snicker Cookies!

October 2: National Smarties Day

Pick up a few rolls of Smarties candies and turn this tiny candy into a simple family game night prize. You can also use them as bingo markers or hand them out for correct trivia answers.

They would also be an easy and inexpensive addition to Halloween party favors.

October 3: Butterfly and Hummingbird Day

Butterflies and hummingbirds are both fascinating to watch, so spend a little time outside looking for them today. Visit a botanical garden, take a nature walk or sit quietly in the yard and see what appears (if you live in a mild climate).

Children could make a butterfly craft, learn how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly or draw the hummingbirds they would like to see. You could also look up which flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds where you live and make a plan to add a few to your yard.

You could even make a butterfly fruit tray!

October 4: National Taco Day

If ever there were a holiday my family could happily celebrate every day, this would be it! Set up a taco bar with several fillings and toppings so everyone can make exactly what they like.

For a fun date night, visit a couple of local restaurants and split one taco at each place. You may find a new favorite without spending a fortune.

Be sure to add all the extras to your taco bar to make it absolutely perfect!

October 5: National Do Something Nice Day

Look for one simple way to brighten someone else’s day. Take a treat to a friend, send an encouraging text, or help a neighbor with a small task.

Get the kids involved by asking each person in the family to choose one nice thing to do. Small acts count!

October 6: National Noodle Day

Serve a favorite noodle dish for dinner, whether that means spaghetti (technically “pasta” but I won’t tell if you don’t tell), ramen, chicken noodle soup, or pad Thai. If your family can’t agree on a main dish, let everyone choose a different noodle dinner and try a little of everything.

This is also a good excuse for a cozy at-home date night with takeout from a restaurant you have never tried.

October 7: National Chocolate-Covered Pretzel Day

Chocolate-covered pretzels are one of the easiest treats to make, and that sweet-and-salty combination is hard to beat. Dip pretzel rods or twists in melted chocolate, then add sprinkles, chopped nuts or crushed candy.

Use orange, purple and black decorations to make an easy Halloween treat the kids can help create.

October 8: National Pierogi Day

If your family has never tried pierogi, today is the perfect excuse. These Polish dumplings are usually filled with potatoes, cheese or other savory ingredients. Look for them in the freezer section or order them from a local Polish or Eastern European restaurant. You can also make some pierogis from scratch!

Trying a food from another culture is exactly the kind of easy little adventure these holidays are meant to inspire!

October 9: International Beer and Pizza Day

This one practically plans date night for you! Order a pizza, pick up a favorite beer and enjoy a relaxed evening at home. You can also go out and try a beer flight with some wood-fired pizza. Invite another couple over and ask everyone to bring a different beer to sample.

For a family celebration, swap the beer for root beer and let the kids make individual pizzas.

if you really want to take your pizza nights up a notch, think about getting this pizza oven. I can’t recommend Solo Stove products enough. We have several and love them all!

October 10: National Cake Decorating Day

You do not need professional skills to celebrate this holiday. Bake cupcakes, then set out frosting, sprinkles and candy and let everyone decorate.

You could even turn it into a friendly competition with categories such as funniest cupcake, most colorful cake and cake most likely to appear on a baking-fail show!

You could even practice your cake decorating skills on cookies!

October 11: National It’s My Party Day

You certainly don’t need a birthday or major holiday to throw a party! Invite a few friends over for dessert, plan a family game night or let the kids choose a silly theme for an informal celebration. I once had a party to celebrate the man that invented air conditioning….any excuse for a party, am I right?

Keep it easy with food you already have, simple decorations and activities everyone enjoys. Sometimes the most memorable parties are the ones you throw for no particular reason at all!

October 12: National Gumbo Day

I have been on a mission to make the best gumbo for a while now. We have a local restaurant here that serves THE BEST GUMBO in the universe and my goal is to recreate this recipe at home. I’m not quite there yet, but soon….

To celebrate this day, make a warm pot of gumbo or order it from your favorite Cajun restaurant. Gumbo is especially good for feeding a group, so invite family, friends or neighbors to join you!

If you have never made gumbo, today is a great excuse to try. You could even compare a couple of recipes or varieties and decide whether your family prefers chicken and sausage, seafood or something else entirely.

October 13: National M&M’s Day

What?? Yes! This one is easy and delicious! Just pick up some M&Ms and eat them! You could also use the candies to decorate cookies, dessert pizza, brownies or cupcakes.

For younger children, use them for sorting, counting or a very colorful round of bingo before eating them!

October 14: National Dessert Day

Clearly, this is an important holiday that should not be overlooked! Make your family’s favorite dessert, try something completely new or pick up several small treats and hold a dessert tasting.

This would also be a fun excuse to invite friends over. Ask each person to bring a favorite dessert, then cut everything into small portions so everyone can sample them all in an easy and fun dessert bar!

October 15: National Grouch Day

Even grouches deserve a holiday! Watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas, read a funny book featuring a grumpy character or have fun creating some Grinch crafts.

You could also challenge the family to turn Grouch Day upside down by seeing who can go the entire evening without complaining. I suspect that may be harder than it sounds!

October 16: National Dictionary Day

Celebrate Dictionary Day by learning a few new words together. Choose several unusual words and have everyone guess what they mean, then award a point for the funniest answer and another for the closest definition.

You could also challenge everyone to use a new word during dinner or ask each family member to find the strangest word in the dictionary. This is an especially easy holiday to turn into some ridiculous dinner conversations!

October 17: National Pasta Day

Make a big pot of pasta and invite someone to join you for dinner. Keep it simple with spaghetti and garlic bread or try making Pasta Fagioli.

October is also National Pasta Month, so I see no reason to limit yourself to just one bowl!

The kids will have fun with my Halloween pasta dinner!

October 18: National Chocolate Cupcake Day

Bake chocolate cupcakes and let the kids decorate them with frosting and sprinkles.

If baking is not happening today, stop at a bakery and buy one really good cupcake to split with someone you love. Celebration accomplished!

October 19: National New Friends Day

Invite someone you would like to know better to join you for coffee, lunch or a walk. Encourage children to sit with someone new, include another child at recess or invite a classmate to play.

Making new friends can feel awkward at any age, but a simple invitation is often all it takes.

October 20: National Chicken and Waffles Day

Chicken and waffles somehow manage to feel like breakfast, dinner and a special treat all at once! Make them at home, take the family to a restaurant that serves them, or use frozen waffles and prepared chicken to keep the celebration incredibly easy.

Set out maple syrup, hot honey, fruit and a few other toppings so everyone can create a favorite combination. This would also make a fun and very casual date night.

October 21: National Apple Day

Celebrate one of fall’s best flavors with caramel apples, apple crisp, apple dumplings, apple cider or a trip to an apple picking orchard. Set up an apple taste test with several apple varieties and see which ones your family likes best.

You could also slice apples and put out caramel, chocolate and toppings for an easy caramel-apple bar without the struggle of biting into a whole apple!

October 22: Wombat Day

Wombats are short-legged, burrowing animals native to Australia, and they are surprisingly fascinating! Celebrate by watching a few wombat videos, learning some fun facts or letting the kids make a wombat craft.

Here’s a fact sure to get everyone’s attention: wombats are the only animals known to produce cube-shaped poop! If that doesn’t inspire children to learn more about them, I’m not sure what will.

October 23: National Boston Cream Pie Day

Despite its name, Boston cream pie is actually a cake filled with custard and topped with chocolate. Pick one up from a bakery, try making your own or look for Boston cream donuts if you want a non-cake variation.

Serve it after dinner and enjoy learning why this famous cake ended up being called a pie.

October 24: National Make a Difference Day

Look for one practical way your family can make a difference today. Pick up litter at a park, donate supplies to a local organization, help an elderly neighbor or complete a small service project together.

The activity does not have to be big to matter. Let each family member suggest an idea, then choose something everyone can help accomplish in an afternoon.

October 25: National Greasy Food Day

Go out for burgers and fries, order onion rings, pick up fried chicken or visit a local diner for something deliciously indulgent.

If you want to fry up something at home, try these amazing hushpuppies.

October 26: National Pumpkin Day

It would be almost impossible to let October pass without a day devoted entirely to pumpkins! Visit a pumpkin patch, carve or paint pumpkins, make a pumpkin craft, bake a pumpkin dessert or serve a cozy pumpkin dinner.

If you are preparing for a party, this is also the perfect day to finish your pumpkin decorations or test a new Halloween idea.

October 27: National Black Cat Day

Black cats have long been part of Halloween decorations, but this holiday was created to help these often-overlooked cats find loving homes. Learn a few facts about black cats, donate supplies to an animal shelter or share an adoptable cat from a local rescue on your social media.

For pure family fun, make a black-cat craft or watch a movie featuring a memorable feline.

October 28: National Chocolate Day

Celebrate with your favorite chocolate treat or try a new chocolate flavor.

For an easy date night, pair several chocolates with coffee, hot cocoa or wine and see which combinations you like best.

October 29: National Hermit Day

After nearly an entire month of celebrating, you have officially earned a quiet night at home celebrating National Hermit Day! Put on your comfiest clothes, silence your phones and enjoy a few hours without errands, social obligations or anywhere you need to be.

Read a book, work on a puzzle, watch a favorite movie or let everyone retreat to a separate corner of the house.

October 30: National Candy Corn Day

Candy corn may be one of the most controversial candies ever created. Buy a bag and settle the debate with a family vote. Love it or hate it?

Use candy corn in a snack mix, add it to party favors or play a game in which everyone guesses how many pieces are in a jar. Even people who refuse to eat it can still enjoy the game!

If you and your family don’t like candy corn, you’ll love this Halloween candy corn treat. It looks like candy corn but it isn’t candy corn!

You can even use it to play Halloween relay games!

October 31: Halloween

Finish the month with the biggest October celebration of all! Go trick-or-treating, host a costume party, decorate the car for a trunk-or-treat or plan a Halloween game night at home.

Halloween can become complicated quickly, but it does not have to be. A few easy games, a bowl of treats and people you enjoy are enough for a really fun night.

Make October a Little More Fun

October already gives us cooler evenings, fall flavors, pumpkin patches and Halloween, but these smaller holidays create even more opportunities to enjoy the season with people you love.

Don’t feel as though you need to celebrate October holidays every day. Choose the holidays that sound fun, add a few to your calendar and keep the plans simple. A plate of homemade cookies, a family taste test or a relaxed pizza date can turn an ordinary day into something everyone remembers.

And if your family decides that National Taco Day or National Chocolate Day deserves to become an annual (or weekly) tradition, even better!
